Frequently Asked Questions
What is a trust badge?
A trust badge is any emblem, seal, symbol or icon intended to quickly establish trust with prospective customers and other audiences online. It’s a shorthand way to communicate credibility to those who visit your website or come across your brand via other marketing channels (social, email, landing pages, white paper, Ebook, etc.)
Why do I need a trust badge?
Customer trust has always been a BIG DEAL! On average, 75% of your potential customers drop out of your sales funnel long before checkout and won’t end up buying from you.
Read that AGAIN!
Ease the concerns that cost you sales by placing our trust badge on your site at strategic decision-making points throughout every stage of the buyer’s journey, like the cart and product pages, giving shoppers the assurances they need to complete their purchase.
How it works
Consumers Digest has been turning shoppers into buyers since 1960. Over the past six decades we’ve been privileged to curate carefully researched purchase recommendations that millions of subscribers trust and rely on by working with thousands of brands, both large and small, to identify a complete product universe. In today’s complex and often confusing marketplace, it’s only natural for shoppers to be wary the first time they shop at your store.
To give your brand an edge, Consumers Digest offers a trustmark that helps alleviate the most common concerns people have when they shop online. Earn our seal of approval to display Consumers Digest trustmarks on your site and show visitors that they can trust your business.
After you’ve emailed us about using the Consumers Digest trust badge, we’ll quickly audit your site and verify key criteria so we know your business is legitimate. Once you’ve passed and we’ve verified your information, you’ll earn the right to use our badge across your digital presence.
We are currently beta testing a version of the trust badge in the form of a Shopify app. When your visitors click on/hover over the trust badge, we’ll show them an on-site modal that displays a short list of criteria we measure in order to verify your site, proving to your visitors they can shop with confidence. For your convenience, we’ve built a simple dashboard allowing you to adjust the size of the badge, control where you display the badge throughout the customer journey and customize the badge’s positioning (left, right & center).
Reach more customers with our MOBILE FRIENDLY design
Unlike other trust badges, we’ve designed it for brands to customize how they display it across desktop, mobile and tablet devices; helping brands reach even more customers, capture marketshare and boost sales.
The impact of Consumer Digest trustmarks on your site’s loading time is minimal. The badges are engineered to be asynchronous, meaning they load simultaneously with other scripts, and should not affect your site’s loading time.
When you install our trustmarks, you simply add a call to our script, which is hosted and executed on our own server, ensuring minimal impact on your web server.
Additionally, in June 2021 we optimized the performance of the trust badge code by removing our reliance on jQuery. This enabled trustmark file sizes to be smaller, and therefore load even faster.
- Visit our Shopify App Store listing.
- Enter your Shopify domain name and click Log in.
- Log into your Shopify account if required.
- On the installation confirmation page, select Install app.
- We’ll send an email to verify and secure your account.
- Confirm your email via a link sent to the Account email listed in your Shopify admin.
- You’ll be prompted to enter your contact information and set a password to secure your account. At this point, our proprietary trust algorithm is conducting a security scan of your website to make sure your business is legitimate and customers can safely purchase your products/services. If your site passes the security scan, the trustmark will begin displaying on your site immediately.
- Upon verification, head back inside your Shopify account. Hover your cursor over “Apps” on the left side of your menu picklist and click it. At the top of the screen in blue, next to the app Icon (blue and yellow), click on where you see “Consumers Digest – Trust Badge”. Once clicked, you will be presented with a simple dashboard allowing you to adjust the size of the badge, control where you display the badge throughout the customer journey and customize the badge’s positioning (left, right & center). Once you have determined the size and location of the badge, make sure to click update to save all changes.
How to test the badge’s size & location on your Shopify storefront:
- Click on a product from your catalog.
- If you set the trust badge to show on product images, it will appear in the top left corner of the pictures on the product page.
- If you click the box with the “add to cart button on the product page” option, the badge will show just below the “add to cart” button – again you can adjust the placement here to the left, right & center. The same action for the “add to checkout button on the cart page” will also do exactly as it suggests.
- You will notice the badge’s size is displayed exactly how you set it in the dashboard and the location is displayed exactly how you set it as well. Make sure you click update after you have the size and location of the badge to your liking.
- When a user adds a product(s) to their cart by clicking the “add to cart” button, they are taken to the check out page where they can make the purchase. The user will see the trust badge displayed in the correct size and location you set in your dashboard underneath the “Check Out” button in order to reinforce trust at this strategic touchpoint in the customer’s journey. Again, make sure you click update after you have the size and location of the badge to your liking.
- If you want to change the size or location of the badge, simply go back to the dashboard inside your Shopify Partners account and make the necessary changes.
- This process works the exact same way across devices on desktop, mobile and tablets!
That’s all folks! No code and no unnecessary steps!
Please keep in mind that in order for a Shopify merchant to display the trust badge, our verification process requires that we perform the necessary due diligence into your brand in order to verify key criteria. Ensuring the customer has a wonderful experience is at the core of everything we stand for and optimizing the trust you share with your audience is why we exist. Once the merchant’s information is verified, we know that the business is legitimate. Upon passing, the merchant will earn the right to use our badge.
Only Shopify Plus sites can add custom code (including the trustmarks) to the checkout pages.
We are currently developing a compatible version of our trust badge to comply with all Shopify Plus users so if you are currently using Shopify Plus, we’re happy to help you add the badges to your storefront but please be patient with us.
We ask that you please contact us for implementation assistance.
When you display Consumers Digest trustmarks on your site, visitors can click or hover the cursor over them to open the verification modal. The modal provides further information about the criteria we evaluate your website on so visitors will understand their significance and can begin to build trust with your brand.
